Sean Rushton Departs After Leading Group for Almost Four Years

WASHINGTON, DC The Committee for Justice (CFJ), which promotes constitutionalist judicial nominees, today announced that Curt Levey has been named its Executive Director. Mr. Levey has served as CFJ's general counsel since the summer of 2005. He replaces Sean Rushton, who has led the committee since early 2003.

Rushton is leaving CFJ to take a position with the Bush Administration.

Before joining CFJ, Mr. Levey served as Director of Legal & Public Affairs at the Center for Individual Rights and headed the Title IX policy group at the U.S. Education Department's Office for Civil Rights. He also clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals after graduating Harvard Law School with honors. Mr. Levey has an M.S. and B.A. in computer science from Brown University and worked in the field of artificial intelligence before attending law school.

Mr. Levey brings to his new position hands-on experience with judicial confirmation battles, the federal courts, and the leading constitutional issues of the day. He also has broad communications experience. His knack for explaining legal issues has been honed in numerous op-eds, talks, and appearances on national radio and television programs.

The Honorable Spencer Abraham, CFJ's chairman, said: "Curt has already been a great asset to CFJ as its general counsel. With his combination of legal, political, and communications experience, he is well prepared to lead this organization as we face the challenges of a Democratic Senate."

Mr. Levey talked today about CFJ's mission: "After working on some of the nation's most hotly contested constitutional and civil rights issues, I became convinced that there is no more important legal issue than the composition of the federal courts. I joined CFJ last year because I was impressed by what Sean had done to make CFJ the premier organization devoted to putting constitutionalist judges on the federal courts. Now I have big shoes to fill, but I'm excited about working to ensure that the great strides made in restoring rule of law to the federal courts continue unabated."
