CFJ Thanks Harriet Miers for Her Service
Calls on Bush to Pick Replacement Who Will Send Strong Signal to Democrats

WASHINGTON, DC - The Committee for Justice (CFJ), which promotes constitutionalist judicial nominees and the rule of law, today thanked outgoing White House Counsel Harriet Miers for her service to President Bush and the nation.

"Those of us who care deeply about the nomination and confirmation of constitutionalist judges, as well as all the American people, have much to be thankful for in the service of Harriet Miers," said CFJ executive director Curt Levey. "She will be remembered for her stewardship of the nomination and successful confirmation of two outstanding Supreme Court Justices - John Roberts and Samuel Alito - as well as of many highly qualified, mainstream constitutionalist judges on the lower federal courts."

"She will also be remembered for the dignified manner in which she handled her decision to remove her name from consideration for a seat on the Supreme Court," said Levey, adding that "her long hours and loyalty to the President impressed all those who worked with her."

Turning to the choice of a new White House Counsel, Levey noted that "with the Democrats now in control of the Senate, we can expect them to step up their obstruction of President Bush's judicial nominees. Thus, it is particularly important that the President choose a replacement for Miers who shares her commitment to putting strong constitutionalists on the federal courts. Specifically, we hope the President's choice of a new Counsel will send a strong signal to Senate Democrats that all of the President's judicial nominees will have a strong devotion to the rule of law, such that there is little point in obstructing constitutionalist nominees while hoping for the President to make nominations that are less objectionable to proponents of judicial activism."
